Why It Matters

Heat is what ages oil. Hold it too high for too long and the oil oxidises, the additive package is used up early and the pressure the pump generates falls away just when the engine is working hardest. That shows up on track as a warning light late in a session, or over time as accelerated bearing and turbo wear. A correctly sized cooler with a thermostat keeps the oil in a stable window, which means consistent pressure through a session and longer intervals between oil changes. The thermostat matters as much as the core, because oil that never reaches operating temperature on a cool morning holds moisture and fuel dilution instead of burning them off.

How to Choose the Right Oil Cooler

Size the cooler to the use, not to the biggest core that will physically fit. Road cars in a hot climate usually do well with a modest core and a thermostatic plate, which adds capacity for hard driving without overcooling in traffic. Cars doing repeated hard laps need more core area and, just as importantly, a genuine supply of clean air to it, so mounting position and ducting deserve as much thought as the core itself. Where space is tight, an oil to water exchanger is often the more practical route.
