Dry Carbon and Wet Layup: What Is the Difference
Dry carbon usually means prepreg fabric, already impregnated with a controlled amount of resin, cured under heat and pressure. The resin content is low and consistent, so the part comes out lighter and stiffer, and it is the process used where weight genuinely matters. It costs more and takes longer to make. Wet layup means dry fabric laid into a mould with resin applied during the process, often vacuum bagged afterwards. It carries more resin, so the same panel is heavier and less stiff, but it is far cheaper and perfectly sensible for cosmetic pieces, covers and overlays where nobody is counting grams. There is also a middle ground you will see often: an original panel or plastic part with a carbon skin bonded over it, which looks the part and adds no strength. Twill, Forged and Finish
Twill is the classic diagonal checkerboard weave, and it is what most people picture when they think of carbon. Plain weave is a tighter, more uniform square pattern. Forged carbon is not woven at all: short lengths of fibre are compression moulded, which gives the marbled, random pattern and lets makers form complex shapes and thicker sections that a woven cloth cannot follow neatly. On finish, gloss shows the weave brightest and gives the most depth, but it also shows swirl marks and dust the way black paint does. Matte and satin are calmer, hide fingerprints and light marks better, and suit cars where the carbon is meant to look structural rather than decorative. Matching an existing part matters more than choosing the prettiest option, because a twill panel next to a forged one, or gloss next to satin, always looks unintentional.
UV, Clear Coat and Life in the Gulf Sun
This is the question that matters most in this region and the one worth being honest about. The fibre itself is not the weak point. The clear coat over it is, because the epoxy resin underneath degrades under strong ultraviolet light, and once the clear coat thins or fails, the surface goes cloudy and yellow and the weave loses its depth. A quality part uses a clear coat with proper ultraviolet inhibitors, and that is one of the real differences between a well made panel and a cheap one that looks identical on day one. In practice: park in shade or a garage where you can, keep a ceramic coating or paint protection film over exterior carbon, and wash off dust rather than letting it bake on. Cabin carbon suffers too, from a dashboard sitting in direct sun all day, so a windscreen shade is not a small thing. If a part does go dull, it can usually be sanded back and re-cleared by a good composite shop, so a faded panel is not automatically scrap.
