Why It Matters

Fuel supply is the one part of the system with no reserve. If the pump cannot keep up, rail pressure falls, the injectors deliver less than the calibration expects and the engine goes lean at exactly the moment it is under the most load. Modern control units will pull timing and cut power to protect the engine when they see it, which is safer but still means the car is not doing what it should. A healthy pump also matters at low tank levels and in high ambient temperatures, both normal conditions here, because a hot pump running dry of surrounding fuel loses both cooling and prime. Replacing a tired pump restores headroom the rest of the system depends on.

How to Choose the Right Fuel Pump

On a standard car, fit the correct replacement pump and renew the hanger seal and filter sock while the module is out. On a tuned car, size the pump around the fuel the engine will actually consume at maximum load, with margin, and remember that pump output falls as pressure rises so a flow figure only means something at your working pressure. Voltage matters too, since a pump starved of voltage through undersized wiring will underperform regardless of its rating. Cars that see track use should consider a surge tank or a twin pump hanger, because sustained cornering can uncover a single pickup.
