When rail pressure drops or oscillates under heavy demand, some cylinders receive less fuel than the map assumes, and the engine ends up running unevenly at exactly the point where the margin is thinnest. A rail with proper volume and a sensible feed and return arrangement damps those pressure swings. On a modified engine with larger injectors, the standard rail can also simply run out of internal volume, which is the usual reason for changing it. A rail is also the natural place to add a fuel pressure sensor so you can see what the system is doing rather than guess.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eHow to Choose the Right Fuel Rail\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost standard cars never need anything beyond the original rail and fresh seals. Consider a change when injectors are being uprated, when a return style regulator is being added, or when the original rail is damaged or corroded. Match the rail to the injector body and O ring size, to the manifold bolt spacing and to the height of the injectors you are fitting, because a rail that is even a couple of millimetres out will not seat the injectors properly. Decide on single or twin feed based on the number of cylinders per bank and how much fuel the engine will draw. Direct injection engines run rail pressures far above port injection systems and their high pressure rails are not interchangeable with port injection parts.
