A perished O ring, a hose that is not rated for the fuel being used or a clamp that has been reused once too often is a genuine fire risk, not just an inconvenience. Ethanol blended fuels are particularly hard on older rubber and can degrade hose and seals that were fine on previous fuels. Hose has to be rated for the fuel being run, and for the pressure at that point in the system, since a low pressure return line hose is not suitable on a high pressure feed. Fittings need to match the thread standard actually used on your car rather than the one that looks similar. Where a part is a factory specific item, such as a quick connect coupling or a tank lock ring, use the correct part rather than an approximation.
